As a movement of dedicated volunteers working towards human rights change, our leadership is in constant movement through our democratic processes at General Annual Meetings in Amnesty entities. When permitting, Amnesty entity Boards usually have a period of time to prepare for changes in their composition and plan for new elections (see module Elect – Recruit). This means that there is an opportunity to prepare for an appropriate managed exit for Board member’s leaving.

During this time, the Board chair plays an important role in supporting and ensuring that departing Board members are able to dedicate some time to reflect on their service and plan the handover of their roles and responsibilities. Assuring there is appropriate time for a managed exit, guarantees continuous leadership and continuity in the organisation (see module Induct)

The suggested process below, outlines the main activities involved during this departure phase. During this time, the AI entity Director is also invited to participate.

Moreover, through the Movement Building Programme, your Regional Capacity Building Coordinator can also provide support on:

  • Advising on all steps of the managed exit process, good practice and Amnesty guidelines.

  • Advising on different ways to capture feedback of the departing Board member.

  • Connecting you to other entities who may be able to provide advice or support.
